In late August we started a month long R&D project with Cardboard Citizens, a London based theatre company working with and for homeless people. We were brought on board by Project Manager Tony McBride as Visual Designers for a verbatim theatre piece entitled Street/Life. After 3 week of devising the piece with Director Terry O’Leary, Designer Joanna Layla and Sound Designer Tom Yardley we did a 3 night sell out run with a cast of 8. We went predominantly analogue for the project using slide projectors to present character motifs. More info here
The second GhostChant single we’ve created artwork for is released this month, in keeping with the whole campaign, it’s another smokey image to complement the hazy sounds of the soon to released debut album, on BBE Records.
Since the recording of their first album, which they recorded in our shared studio 12 years ago, through ‘The Hungry Years’ and during their 7 year hiatus we have always maintained a close relationship with the band Chungking. This week sees the release of their 4th album ‘Defender’, the first on their own label Black Volta. We did a little post work on the albums cover and created the video for the album’s lead single ‘Beautiful World’. The video was created using layers of VHS footage from the NASA archive and it’s being premiered by MUZU on June 1st.

We worked with director/ choreographer Shelly Love on her latest film, ‘The Fallen Circus’, through winter into spring. The project was funded by the Arts Council and Shelly devised the piece with performers from The National School of Circus Arts. Shelly came to us with an edit of the green screen filmed footage and we were tasked with keying, compositing and creating the background artwork for the first chapter of what will eventually be an hour long film.

With the announcement on the delay of the opening of the Pier in Hastings being made public and the Pier charity’s first AGM, with public shareholders, imminent we were asked to rethink the Pier hoardings again. We discussed the prospect with CEO Simon Opie, creating new artwork for the 24 metres of frontage, and decided to work on the 3 themes of ‘Work in Progress’, ‘Public Engagement’ and ‘Future Vision’. We also created 3 simple animations of the hoardings for presentation at the AGM which can be viewed on the Pier Charity’s You Tube channel.

French music producer Madeon is currently touring the global festival circuit in support of his debut album ‘Adventure’ and producer/ director Bob Jaroc asked us to make 6 videos for Madeon to live mix on stage for the show’s climax, the track ‘Home’. We created a series of low polygon environments with fly-through camera work and fast cut edits to ride the song’s anthemic melody.

Unlimited in Brighton have stocked our Seasonal Moth prints for the past couple of years and at the start of 2015 they invited us to take part in a collaborative project entitled ‘FourPlay’. The collaboration, between their in-house design consultancy and forty of the designers they stock, started with the designers choosing one of forty 4 letter words to take inspiration from in order to create an image. Once the image was completed Unlimited incorporated complimentary typography. We chose the word ‘Fake’.
Fourplay is showing at BoxPark, London 23-30 April 2015 & Unlimited, Brighton 1-31 May 2015 you can view the full image and purchase a copy (limited to 100) here:
